Palworld, the recent breakout survival game on Steam and Xbox, has found itself at the center of a heated controversy involving accusations of plagiarism of Pokémon designs and potential AI influence. The game, developed by the Japanese studio Pocketpair, gained massive attention with an impressive 2 million sales within its first 24 hours of early access release.

Did they use AI and how? Perhaps they used some of the most popular AI tools to generate character appearances, drawing inspiration from existing games? Let’s figure it out!

Accusations of Pokémon Design Similarities

Social media users were quick to point out the supposed design similarities between Palworld creatures known as ‘Pals,’ and Pokémon. Some users have expressed concern over the game’s perceived lack of borrowing from existing Pokémon designs, sparking debate about the extent of these similarities and calling into question the originality of Palworld.

Several designs with noticeable similarities

Further complicating the debate is Pocketpair’s historical connection to generative artificial intelligence tools. The studio’s previous game, AI: Art Impostor, clearly used an AI image generator as its core mechanic.

Users on social media noted CEO Takuro Mizobe’s past praise for the potential of AI image generators in content creation, suggesting a connection between Pocketpair’s use of generative AI and the design similarities in Palworld.

CEO Responds and Artists’ Abuse

In response to the allegations, Palworld director and Pocketpair CEO Takuro Mizobe acknowledged the influence of Pokémon on the game’s design but called for an end to online abuse of artists.

This speculation is gaining traction, especially considering that Palworld was developed by a largely inexperienced team, including people who were amateurs before joining the project.

In a blog post that appeared this week, Mizobe claimed that Palworld’s 100 character concepts were made mostly by a single graduate student.

“She was a new graduate and had applied to nearly 100 companies, but failed them all. And she is now drawing most of the characters in Palworld.”

Mizobe’s post also touched on Pocketpair’s previous game, Craftopia, demonstrating its reliance on off-the-shelf assets. Additionally, he discussed the lack of animators when Palworld’s development began, highlighting the challenges that had to be overcome in bringing the game to life.

“It’s truly a miracle that Pal World was born, that it was completed, and that it turned out to be such a fun game.”

Regulatory Shifts and Industry Response to AI in Game Development

Amid the controversy surrounding Palworld, the global gaming industry is experiencing changes in regulations regarding generative AI. Europe’s move to regulate generative AI, requiring disclosure of copyrighted data used for training, points to a growing awareness of the potential impact on creative industries. Valve’s recent change to Steam’s rules requiring clear disclosure of AI-generated assets reflects a broader industry recognition of the need for transparency.

Positive Player Reception Amidst Design Controversy

While accusations of design plagiarism swirl around Palworld, player reviews on Steam suggest that the controversy has not significantly dampened the game’s initial success. Positive feedback from players underscores the notion that gameplay experiences often outweigh design concerns for the gaming community.

Conclusion: Palworld’s Impact Beyond Controversy

Palworld’s journey from a breakout hit to a center of controversy and debate signifies its unique position in the gaming landscape. The allegations of design plagiarism, coupled with the use of generative AI tools, present challenges and opportunities for the gaming industry to navigate ethical considerations and creative expression.
