In a recent interview with Famitsu, Elden Ring director Hidetaka Miyazaki revealed that the upcoming expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, will feature a diverse array of new weapons and spells, marking them as a “main selling point.” Beyond what was showcased in the trailer, Miyazaki disclosed intriguing details about the new weapons, sparking excitement among fans.

The expansion introduces eight new weapon types, including the ōdachi, a formidable and heavier variant of the traditional Japanese sword. However, what caught the attention of many was the mention of “gyakute ken,” translated as “reverse-hand sword.” This term suggests the inclusion of underhand ninja blades, adding a unique and thrilling dimension to the game. Miyazaki’s emphasis on these new weapons implies that they will significantly contribute to the overall gaming experience.

Miyazaki also hinted at a new martial arts moveset and throwing daggers showcased in the trailer. The throwing daggers, in particular, stand out, as they are described not merely as consumable items but as implements that “change all attacks into throws.” This innovative approach to throwing knives adds strategic depth to the gameplay, deviating from the conventional use of such items in FromSoftware games.

Among the notable additions is a double-bladed shield, featured prominently in the trailer. Miyazaki revealed that this weapon is inspired by a historical weapon known as a “dueling shield.” This attention to historical detail and incorporation of unique weapon designs align with FromSoftware’s signature style, delighting players with the prospect of exploring novel playstyles and builds.

As the release of Shadow of the Erdtree approaches, players eagerly anticipate wielding these new weapons and experiencing the fresh dynamics they bring to the Elden Ring universe. The expansion not only promises compelling gameplay but also reinforces the tradition of FromSoftware delivering exceptional content through their DLCs.
